An occlusive agent in the cosmetic industry is an oily or waxy ingredient that forms a physical, protective layer on the skin’s surface. This barrier’s primary function is to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL), effectively sealing moisture into the skin and protecting it from environmental irritants. Ingredients like petrolatum, mineral oil, and various butters are used to deeply hydrate and soothe very dry or compromised skin.
