Emollient

An emollient is a cosmetic ingredient, typically an oil or lipid, whose primary role is to soften, smooth, and condition the skin. It works by filling the spaces between skin cells on the surface, improving texture and providing a comfortable feel. Commonly found in creams and lotions, emollients also assist in barrier function by reducing friction and preventing excessive dryness.
